Guys (and Dudes) Read

A few weeks ago, I was with my middle dude and some of his friends. One friend saw my little dude had a book and asked, “Why would you read when you don’t have to?” I was, to put it mildly, appalled. Intellectually, I know most dudes his age don’t like to read. But, in my heart, I just didn’t believe it. I’m very lucky in that all three of my little dudes like to read for pleasure. Most other parents of dudes aren’t that lucky.

There’s a dude named Jon Scieszka, author of my all-time favorite book for younger dudes, who agrees that dudes need to find and read books they enjoy. He’s set up a website and initiative called Guys Read to help do just that. It’s there to encourage adults to help little dudes start to read and to find books they’ll enjoy. There’s even a section for all you older dudes to help you find books you’ll like to read.

I’d like to encourage you all to go to this website. It’s a fantastic idea, especially if you have little dudes in the house. Study after study have shown that kids who read on their own do better in school and college. These reading dudes also are more likely to continue their education on their own as they grow older.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a book that’s calling my name.
