Oh, so you want to know the question. Simple. The question is this: How am I going to be running around the house and screaming today?

Today, you see, is the first day of school for all three little dudes. It’s time for a bit of a celebration.

It’s been a long summer. An it’s been a short summer. Every year I have a love/hate relationship with the summer months. I know it’s one less summer that I’ll get to spend the with little dudes when they’re actually little dudes. That’s the part I love: sleeping late, hanging out, going and doing just because we want to go and do.

And then there’s the last couple of weeks before school begins again. That’s when it all comes crashing down. They’re getting on each other’s nerves and bickering like they’re getting paid for it. Which gets on my nerves. A lot. Which makes me crankier than usual. Which annoys them. Etc., etc., etc.

All of which accounts for the fact that I plan to be naked (because there’s no on else in the house to laugh and point), screaming and bouncing (with blinds decently closed, of course) on this, their first full day of school.

I’m sure in a couple of days or a week or so, I’m going to start regretting that bit of excess. Especially if anyone gets pictures again this year. I really hate nanny cams. Apropos of nothing. I’m going to start missing having them around all the time. Getting leisurely hugs and mangled morning talk when we’re not in a hurry to get them off to school.

But, now? Today? Naked city, baby. Naked city.

If you value your sanity and don’t want your brain scrubbed to extinguish annoying images, don’t come a knockin’.

Finally. Finally. Finally. We’re all back home.

After a summer spent with at least one little dude gone almost the entire summer, the entire brood is finally back home.

I think it’s time to start breaking out the big stick and whacking folks.

Or I might be overcompensating just a bit.

Finally. Finally. Finally. We’re all back home.

After a summer spent with at least one little dude gone almost the entire summer, the entire brood is finally back home.

I think it’s going to take more than few days for us to all get used to filling the house once again. Shoulders — used to a bit more freedom — are going to be rubbed raw for a while.

Eventually, though, I”m sure we’ll form some scars and get on with life. Scars. Hmm. Scars of love.

You know? I think I might need a bit of a lie down.

I’ll be back tomorrow. Bed is calling.

Now if only the little dudes would just be quiet.

As you’re reading this today, I’m probably on the road again. Today I’m shipping the last of the little dudes off to a camp of some kind. Hyper Lad is off for his fifth year at the Y’s Camp Cheerio.

As you’re reading this today, I’m probably on the road again. Today I’m shipping the last of the little dudes off to a camp of some kind. Hyper Lad is off for his fifth year at the Y’s Camp Cheerio.

This is his first year at camp by himself. In his previous years, Sarcasmo and Zippy the Monkey Boy were both there. Since then, though, first Sarcasmo and then Zippy the Monkey Boy have aged out of the camp. Leaving not-so-little Hyper Lad as the only Jonesboy there.

He said he’s a bit nervous and a bit excited to be on his own. Personally, I can’t wait.

Due to scheduling problems, Hyper Lad’s trip to camp will give us the only little-dude-free time of the summer. For approximately two days. On Tuesday, Sarcasmo will be returning from New Orleans and his time spent helping to rehabilitate houses and neighborhoods that still suffer damage from Hurricane Katrina.

Of course, since he’s basically mythical (in that he seems to have grown unnaturally accustomed to staying in the family room and his room most of the time) it’ll probably still seem a bit like we’ve an empty nest, but I will have to cook for him, so I’ll know he’s there. Not least because all the snacks in the pantry will be disappearing at a prodigious rate.

Next year, we’ve really got to coordinate the schedules a little better, I’ll tell you that much. Considering what we’re having to spend to get them out of the house, the least they could do would be to allow us a little time by ourselves.

Of course, when I say that, I really mean just me since She Who Must Be Working will be, oddly enough, at work most of the day.

Still, it should be interesting practice for that day, only six years into the future, when Hyper Lad is off to college and I have to find something constructive to do.
