I’m just here for a short sentence or two. Today we’ve got a guest blogger. My youngest little dude, Speed Racer, had to write an essay as a bit of a get-ready-for-school session. Here’s what he came up with. I’m just so proud, I had to share it with you.

I’m just here for a short sentence or two. Today we’ve got a guest blogger. My youngest little dude, Speed Racer, had to write an essay as a bit of a get-ready-for-school session. Here’s what he came up with. I’m just so proud, I had to share it with you.

It can be hard in a large family to find something to do that everyone will like. My dad might think the same thing would have been fun for us when I think it’s totally lame. For instance, my dad thought it was a good idea to go to the library for two hours. Boring! The one time we could all agree on is going to Heroes Con.

On Saturday morning, me and my family got in a car to go to Heroes Con — all except for my mom, who was at a triathlon. Which probably no one at Heroes Con has ever been to. Heroes Con is the third-biggest gathering of nerds in the country. Heroes Con is where you can buy comicbooks and meet comic book writers. My dad is the one who introduced us to comics so we are big fans.

As I looked into the window that peered over Heroes Con, I saw a different reality full of geeks, just like me. As I walked through the doors, I thought I just walked into geek heaven. There were people dressed up, more than 1,000 booths and a giant wall of t-shirts. My brothers took off so me and my dad looked around at the thousands of booths. I enjoyed spending time with my dad — this was a much better idea than going to the library.

Then me and my dad found the greatest booth of all — the Dr. McNinja booth. Dr. McNinja is a doctor and a ninja, all at once. We met the person who did Dr. McNinja, Chris Hastings. He signed our book and gave us a shirt. We even shook his hand. It was awesome.

Going to Heroes Con was the best because I got to spend time with my family and get comics. If your going to geek up like me — do it with your friends and family.

It wasn’t until I got much older that I would read other [...]]]> When I was a little dude, the newspaper funnies were just about the only thing I would read in the daily papers. Yes, papers. Way back when, Dallas had a morning paper and an evening paper, both with different comics. Now that was the life.

It wasn’t until I got much older that I would read other sections of the paper, mostly the sports and entertainment sections. I admit it, I was easily amused. Very easily amused. What can I say?

Anyway. My point is that I loved the daily comics. Now, for some reason, my comic-book-loving little dudes won’t — for the most part — be caught dead reading the newspaper funnies at all. Or any other section of the paper. Except for one. My youngest little dude, Speed Racer.

Speed has decided that reading the comics is a good way to stall from having to do his homework. Normally, when he gets home from school, he has a snack and then starts on his homework. That way it’s in the past and he doesn’t have to worry about it as the night grows long. He figures — rightly — that I won’t interfere with any sort of reading he wants to do and the comic pages are just long enough to let him get in a good read, without burning up all his homework time.

I’m glad to see that at least someone in my household is still giving some sort of attention to that dying conveyor of media content, the daily newspaper. I still read it mostly because of a sense of obligation since that’s what payed for my rent and food for so many years. I just want to make sure Speed doesn’t find out you can read most of the comics at various sites on the web. This way we have something to share.

He reads the comics and when he doesn’t understand something (usually it’s something inane like Cathy or Wizard of Id), he’ll ask me about it and I’ll actually have to read those awful comic strips so I can explain their inept, unfunny attempt at humor.

Still, it’s another thing we can share and that’s always a good thing.

Which might go a long way toward explaining why it’s on the list of top holidays [...]]]> I’m not just talking about a seminal punk-ish band. No, I’m using that as a pun so I can talk about blowin’ stuff up. What can I say? I’m a dude. We like to blow stuff up. It’s in our genes.

Which might go a long way toward explaining why it’s on the list of top holidays for my three little dudes. Just yesterday, Speed Racer was perusing the newspaper (searching for the comics. I can’t get him interested in the actual news of a newspaper. Yet.) when he ran across a story about fireworks being sold and sold a lot. He was, to say the least, a bit excited.

“Can we go there? To this place? They’ve got two for one. We can get a lot of fireworks. Can we go today? Right now?”

I had to calm him down a little. For one thing, it’s difficult to talk to someone when they’re clawing into the ceiling and running about like a hyperactive spider. For another, I knew I’d have to wait for his brother, Sarcasmo, to get home from his leadership camp. It would not be good if we were to go buy fireworks and leave Sarcasmo behind. I’d never hear the end of it.

Still, this is an event to which we all look forward. Me because it’s fun to watch all three little dudes pick out stuff to blow up. Them because, well, they’re picking out stuff to blow up.

Our favorites are mortars. Just because we love the thump as they launch and they really do look fantastic when they explode all the way up there in the air.
