I’ve written before about how glad I am we didn’t have this sort of thing when I was growing up, because now there’s no written record to prove anything. I’ve always been a firm believer that you should never write something down that you wouldn’t mind hearing read in an open court or by your mother. (Yes, I know that sounds odd for someone who writes almost every day about what’s going on in his family, but bear with me.) Apparently, these teachers forgot that little maxim and posted shirtless photos of themselves (a male teacher), and used language that could be considered profane.

For most folks, this sort of thing could be a pain in the butt, especially when a new employer googles you before hiring you. Teachers, though, are a special case. They have in their classrooms some of the most technologically savvy humans on the planet. And you know there’s probably not a student out there with the ability to do it, who hasn’t looked up a hated teacher online, hoping to find something embarrassing.

Teachers don’t really have a private life, as any teacher who has been accosted in the grocery store by an angry parent or excited kidd can tell you. And that’s the problem. In the classroom, teachers have to maintain, if not respect, then, at least, a little fear among the kids in their various classes. It’s hard to do that when some kid is passing around a transcript of the teacher hitting on a woman over the internet. I feel for the teachers, I really do. (Well, not for the one who said mean and cruel things about her students in public. That’s just stupid and there’s always been a penalty for stupid.) This lack of a private life, having always to be on guard, is just another reason why teachers deserve a lot more money than they get.

It’s also why I don’t want to go back in the classroom. Well, that and the restraining order.
