Freaky Friday: Slow, Like, Whoa

by Richard

One of my favorite parts of the show Mythbusters is when Adam and Jamie blow stuff up real good and then play the explosion back in ultra slow motion.

It’s just fascinating, dude. We get to see the gradual disintegration of the object getting the el-explodo treatment, the barely perceptible movement of the onrushing pressure wave expanding through the air, and the fireball pushing out from the point of immolation.

And then there’s slow-mo of hummingbird’s wings. Or, really, just about any complex process. I mean, you can even get a cool video out of something as mundane a person getting slapped when you run it back in slow motion.

Which makes this video something pretty amazing.

Take some dudes out in a parking lot. They’re wearing Vans and are covered in ink. Of course they’re gliding by on skateboards. And then one of them jumps up off the skateboard, which proceeds to jump around, twist and spin like it’s been attached to an epileptic top, before dropping back to the earth, wheels down, ready for the skater to gently deposit himself back on the board.

That happens again and again. Just watching it fills me with wonder and amazement. I can’t believe these dudes are actually whipping that skateboard around, keeping it under control. It goes by so fast, I can barely see what’s happening.

Until somebody gets out there with a slow-motion camera. And then it goes from awesome to mind-blowing.

Prepare your minds, dudes. There’s a possibility it might be blown.
