Something New

by Richard

I’ve written before about just how much I LOVE the entire idea of the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament. March Madness, dudes! It’s wonderful. It really, really is.

And the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament are — without doubt — the two best sporting days of the year. Even though I’m mostly a college football dude, I still rank these two days as the best days of the year.

Normally, I make sure to have no work those days so I can be safely in front of the TV ready to watch and watch and watch and then cry because my brackets are usually shattered before the second round is even begun.

Also normally, I watch the games by myself. After all, even though I love these days, it’s not like I think they’re more important in school, so the young dudes stay there and suffer while I have a great day. I know, I’m mean that way.

This year, though, things are different. For some reason, the school attended by Zippy the Monkey Boy is out both Thursday and Friday. And Zippy the Monkey Boy actually likes basketball.

All of which meant that I woke the young dude up early (around 11:15 ish in the morning and, for Zippy the Monkey Boy, that really is early when he doesn’t have school.) and got a chance to enjoy the games with one of my sons. It was great. We were cheering for the same team (which, of course, lost. Boo, Clemson!) and laughing and pointing out all the great plays.

It’s wonderful when you can share an interest and an activity with one of your sons. Really it is.

Of course, it only lasted until the end of the first game. After that, he sort of drifted off upstairs to go watch something else on the TV up there. Still, it was nice while it lasted. Bonding with the next generation is always a good time.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for more basketball. And maybe roping in one of the other young dudes when they get home from school.
