  So we had some neighbors borrow some of our old Halloween costumes. Not the little dudes, the ones that belonged to me and to my wife, known to many as She Who Looks Good In Anything. While I was up in the attic looking for the costumes, I happened to stumble on a treasure trove of lost memories.

  I found the costumes of Halloweens past that belonged to all three of the little dudes. It was a wonderful half hour or so spend going through the costumes and remembering them when they were very, very little.

  I found George of the Jungle’s first costume. Of course it was a pumpkin. I found Zippy the Monkey Boy’s first costume and it was a shark, marking our first knowledge of what he really loved. And, a bit more easily found, was the first costume of Speed Racer, another pumpkin. Never let it be said we’re not more than willing to recycle costumes.

  In each box I opened, I found another layer of memories, another year from the past. George and Zippy went as an octopus and another, different shark. I still remember how hot it was back then and the little dudes were sweating buckets in their costumes. I found another of Zippy’s costumes, a really cool lobster. I think I’m detecting a theme here.

  So, anyway, here’s a bit of unsolicited advice. Quickly grab whatever costumes your little dudes wore this year and stash them away somewhere safe. Pictures just aren’t going to do it. A decade from now you’re going to love running your hands over the little piece of life suspended in dusty amber in your attic.

  Not only that, but you can raid the tomb of lost costumes at any time to build yet another costume. And that’s always fun.
