Just so no one will ever accuse me of being sexist (although I think I might just be accused of being every so slightly self-serving after this post), I wanted to remind you all that Father’s Day is less than a week away. That’s right, June 21 is the day we’ve all set aside to give our non-smoking dad an ashtray we made ourselves, a tie that looks like something got thrown up on it and then run through a kiln just for good measure, or a cologne made from the pheromones of a panther taken during mating season.
Whatever, the gift, it’s the thought behind it that really does count. And I’m talking from experience here. While, yes, I can admit that I love getting presents (like books or gift cards to book stores or even, you know, books), the presents I love the most have nothing to do with money or even anyone outside my house.
The other day I was cleaning out my office (consisting of a desk about a foot wider than my laptop and a small three-shelved cabinet that has to share space with all my cookbooks) and came on some very precious memories. Maybe eight or nine years ago my two oldest little dudes, Sarcasmo and Zippy the Monkey Boy, gave me hand-made father’s day cards. Here’s the one from Zippy.
I am, if it isn’t obvious, the tall, green blobby with pipestem legs on the left.
Now that’s what I call a Father’s Day gift. I’d much rather have that than try to remember which tie I got. Especially since I don’t wear ties.
In fact, I’m enjoying these little gifts so much, I think I’ll send one to my dad this year. I hope he doesn’t mind that my drawing skillz aren’t all that much better than Zippy’s was way back then.
