Dog Days

As I sit here typing, I’m watching out the window as a lady who lives down the street is playing with my neighbors’ dogs. Simba and Abby live next door. Simba is a youngish puppy type and barks constantly at anything that walks, slithers or stalks down the street. He’s also one of the nicest dogs on the street where I live.

Both Simba and Abby will jump up onto the small, wooden fence enclosing their backyard (and it is their backyard) and demand some serious scritching and rubbing if anyone walks near them. Since they’re such nice dogs, of course they get obliged a little bit. In fact, all three of my little dudes like to think of the neighborhood dogs, and especially Simba and Abby (and, of course, a black lab named Dean, who lives down the street and roams the neighborhood like he owns it), as their own dogs. Just dogs they don’t have to care for, feed, walk or scoop poop for.

Sweet deal, that.

Having good neighbors, who take care of their pets and like to share them with the folks living nearby? Well, that’s a wonderful thing. I just hope you’ve got something similar in your neighborhood, dude.
