I have been coaching my sons’ basketball, football and soccer for a few years now. It has been great. However, it is tough for me and my boys. Specifically, if one of them wants to do something like practice three-point shots, which they can’t make, they get pissed and pout when I say no. If they need to run a lap as discipline for doing something wrong, they get mad and loaf around the field.
Being a parent and son is tough when you’re on the same team. Being the coach is tougher. It’s hard to balance the parenting, coaching and disciplinary needs of the team and children. I also find myself giving them less playing time so I am not viewed as playing favorites.
I have found that the assistant coach can help alleviate and intervene when it comes to my boys. And I can help him with his.
Dude!: Coaching your kids is a great and rewarding thing, but you gotta’ have an assistant who can help out.
