Dude Review: Bride & Prejudice
Filed under A Dude's Guide to KidsSep 9Let’s get one thing straight: I hate musicals. Every kind of musicals. I’ve been known to fall asleep in self-defense when forced to attend viewings of Guys & Dolls, or West-Side Story or Cats (but doesn’t everyone hate that one?). So my wife, known to some as She Who Loves Any Kind of Musical and Will Force Her Loving Husband to See Them No Matter What He Thinks, was completely flabbergasted when I forced her to see a musical because I thought it was so very fantastic.
The movie that made me rethink my position on at least one musical was Bride & Prejudice, and, yes, with a title like that, it was a take-off on Jane Austen’s novel, Pride and Prejudice. But don’t hold that against it. This really is a fantastic movie. From the opening musical number — a fantastic, pounding rhythm and dance at an Indian wedding celebration — I was well and truly hooked.
Starring Martin Henderson and Aishwarya Rai as the couple who can’t get along, but are destined to become newlyweds (and I’m not spoiling anything here. If you’ve seen any sort of romantic comedy since, oh, I don’t know, Pride and Prejudice [To me, it was a comedy], you’ll know where the story is going. It’s the journey that’s awesome. {Boy, this has been a long digression, hasn’t it?}), we also get to meet Balraj Bingley who’s played by Naveen Andrews. If that name is familiar to you, it’s because he also plays Sayid on tv’s Lost. The movie, which is rated a PG-13, but is a wonderful movie for the whole family, came out in 2005 and promptly disappeared from view.
The plot begins in rural India where Balraj brings his American friend, William Darcy, to experience an Indian wedding and, possibly, find a traditional Indian woman to marry. There’s complications aplenty, but even more great laughs and musical set pieces. Really, see for yourself. Here’s the trailer. And here’s the first musical number. I couldn’t stop myself from watching it yet again when I set that link.
Seriously. Get on Netflix and get this movie.
